In 1914, Paul Klee spent two weeks travelling Tunisia with fellow painters Louis Moilliet and Auguste Macke. Inspired by the vibrant towns of the North African country, Klee began his exploration of colour. Having previously omitted colour from his work, he soon became ‘possessed’ by it. This is a wonderful example of the Swiss-born German artist’s early experimentations with abstraction using contrasting watercolour washes.
