In Monet’s time La Corniche was a narrow mountain track; nowadays, it is the main road between Nice and Monaco. Here the sun is high, the lone walker’s shadow short. Monet’s colours glisten: red, green, blue – everything shimmers in the sunlight. The painting was given to the Rijksmuseum already in 1900, when Monet’s work was still entirely unknown in the Netherlands.
The artwork presents an airy depiction of the Monte Carlo coastline with Monet’s quintessential loose brushwork rendering a sense of the palpable atmosphere indicative of Impressionist paintings. The foreground shows a rugged path lined with wild shrubbery and flowers, which leads the eye towards the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. The middleground is occupied by an expansive view of the coastal waters that reflect the sunlight, bordered by the land that recedes into the distance.
In the background, the silhouette of a mountain fades into the hazy blue sky, creating depth and indicating the vastness of the natural vista. A figure can be observed on the path, adding a human element to the scene without dominating the composition. The subtle interplay of natural light and colour conveys the impression of a fleeting moment, as Monet worked to capture the ever-changing moods of the landscape. Overall, “The Corniche of Monaco” encapsulates the essence of the scenic beauty and the light effects that the French Riviera offers, exemplifying why Monet is celebrated as a Master of Landscape painting.
